Will Thumb Sucking Affect Your Child’s Teeth?

Kids Dentist JacksonvilleYoung children often find comfort in sucking their thumbs. However, thumb sucking can have a negative impact on your child’s teeth. The severity depends on the intensity and duration of the thumb sucking. It is normal for babies to suck their thumb and it does not pose a threat to their teeth as long as they stop before their permanent teeth grow in. Since we are a kids dentist in Jacksonville, we thought we would share with you the effects of thumb sucking on permanent teeth.

Bite- The bite can be affected when your child’s permanent teeth are coming in because the thumb can push these teeth forward.

The roof of the Mouth- When your child has their thumb in their mouth for long periods of time, it can change the shape of the roof of their mouth.

Remember it is perfectly okay for your child to seek comfort in sucking their thumb and it will only cause problems when their permanent teeth start growing. If you would like additional information on thumb sucking, you can reach out to our team by calling our office at (904) 264-KIDS today. We are happy to schedule an appointment to take a look at your child’s teeth and determine a care plan specifically for them.

Foods Your Children Should Avoid this Holiday Season if They Have Braces

Kids Dentist JacksonvilleAs a parent, you get to decide the menu for the upcoming holidays. When determining what the family is going to eat, you should take into consideration your child with braces because they cannot eat certain foods. If you make certain foods, your child will not be able to eat all the food everyone else is eating.

Corn on the Cob- Your child should not be eating corn on the cob if they have braces. However, it is safe for your child to eat corn as long as it is not on the cob.

Crunchy Snacks- Sometimes people have appetizers like chocolate-covered pretzels or nuts. Your child could bite down wrong and break a bracket on crunchy foods.

Sticky Sweets- Everyone knows the holidays are about indulging your sweet tooth, but if your child has braces, they should stay away from candy that is sticky. This list would include caramel candies and other candy that could get stuck in their braces.

We hope this list helps you create an incredible menu that the entire family will be able to enjoy together. If you have additional dental questions or would like to schedule an appointment with a kids dentist in Jacksonville, give us a call at (904) 264-KIDS today.
